I've only recently got into the Spark's music (but hey I'm only 20)but I have to say they are an amazing band, totally weird and wacky! It's a shame so much of their music is so hard to get hold of!

Does anyone know if it still exists? Also, Steve Jones is now playing Martin Gordon’s new solo on 103.1 in LA. Cheers.

I'm sure I speak on everyone's behalf in sharing my sadness in hearing the sad news of the loss of Norman 'Dinky' Diamond this month. He was by far one of the better drummers that the Mael's had the good fortune to work with.
His was obviously a man that had some serious troubles in recent years. I hope that he can find peace now.
I/we wish to convey our condolences and respect to the Diamond family and all that knew and and care about Dinky.
Peace be with you..!

About a year ago my collegue (he's in his forties) found out that I - one of the greatest classic rock fans in the world - knew nothing about the SPARKS band. He then gave me a pair of their albums to widen my musical horizons. I was shocked: nothing touched me more for over than 5 years (since I discovered the great band GEORDIE for myself). Those two albums were Propaganda & Indiscreet. Since then I collected almost all their albums. Though I prefer heavy guitar music, I liked much even their disco period. My best wish now is to see them live in Moscow, preferably with their old "electric guitar" repertoire. So now I listen to them rather often, hoping that one day my dream will come true. Long Live SPARKS!!!

"Kimono" was released in the year that I was born so, being a rather mad 'quality' music afficionado, I decided to check it out a few months ago. Bloody hell. What can I say? There's now been several further Sparks albums added to my collection, and it'll keep on growing no doubt. Magic. Sheer, unadulterated magic. What's hilariously ironic is that, although I (consciously) heard Sparks for the first time some ten years after my old band stopped recording, I've undoubtedly stumbled upon our single biggest influence. How is that possible? Answers on a postcard. Keep it coming, guys. You are true legends. And hallelujah to that. Woo-hoooo!

I have a vast record collection that includes all of Sparks 19 albums. It's extremely varied and covers just about every genre. By far without a doubt and probably very little chance to be surpassed, Lil Beethoven is the greatest recording of all time. It's an amazing achievement to be peaking on every release and I can't think of one single artist or band that can create such genius on every release. My only concern is how Ron and Russ can possibly top Lil Beethoven. (Fingers Crossed that they do)!!

I just sent an email to this site minutes ago.I just come to think of that I like to tell you 30 of my absolutely favorites of Sparks songs before(pre-) their disco time in 1979 in a chronological order(or atlest almost chronological)from 1971 to date.
"High C","Slowboat","Biology 2"(Very odd but fantastic and unique and I have read it´s Earle Mankey (at that time in Sparks) that did the singing in this one or one voice?),"Big Bands" ALL from 1971("Halfnelson"album,later to be called "Sparks"when reissued)
"Girl From Germany","Nothing Is Sacred"(it´s fantastic),"Moon Over Kentucky","Underground" All from 1972("A Woofer In Tweeters Clothing" album).
"This Town Ain´t Big Enough for Both of Us","Here In Heaven","Hasta Manana Monsieur","Equator"(odd and great) All from 1974("Kimono My House"album).
"Reinforcements", "BC","Don´t Leave Me Alone With Her","Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth","Who Don´t Like Kids","Marry Me" All 1974 (maybe "Marry Me" 1975?)("Propaganda"album with "Marry Me" (single B-side)added to the cd)
"Hospitality On Parade"(amazing fantastic and really great singing),"Without Using Hands","Get In The Swing","The Lady Is Lingering"(listen to Russell´s voice=fantastic),"Miss The Start, Miss The End","profile" All 1975 ("Indiscreet" album with "profile"(single B-side) added to the cd)
"England",
"I Want To Be Like Everybody Else","Everybody Stupid","White Women" All 1976 ("Big Beat"album except "England"(single B-side) added to the previous "Indiscreet" album)
"Forever Young","Girls On The Brain" Them 2 from 1977("Introducing Sparks"album that sadly haven´t been issued on cd except 2 other tracks on a collection album ("Profile-The Ultimate Sparks Collection"))
How about these Sparks songs as a collection (spanning their era 1971-1977)? I also enjoy Sparks 1979 to date but that´s another story.I just figure it would be such a long email if i continued with that.

Hello there I´m a BIG Sparks fan from Sweden.I have been a big fan since 1976 when I heard "Don´t Leave Me Alone With Her" from "Propaganda"-1974 played on swedish radio.I heard a few Sparks songs that year until I saw then the first time on tv.It was "Get In The Swing" that was shown xmas eve 1976 in a swedish childprogram "Trazan Apansson" that was seen by 100 % of the children in sweden it was said.I was hooked on Sparks for life I guess.
I saw them LIVE for the first time ever in Stockholm (Sweden) 2003 and all 3 shows(3 nights in a row) just recently 2004 at Södra Teatern in Stockholm and especially these 3 latest swedish shows where TRULY AMAZING FANTASTIC BEYOND WORDS.And BIG ART.Ron and Russell still have the (I might say complete) power, energy, vitality and creativity even after around 35 years in business. What a voice, energy, vitality of genius Russell and cool charisma and class and genius of Ron.It´s hard to describe in words their genius. Also Tammy and Dean where great.
I really hope they will be back in sweden soon.I will be there everytime.Maybe I will travel longer sometimes to see them.

what would katherine hepburn say, shoudve been a single,I have no idea who the musician was who played percussion on sparks 95tour,but when she sang, what a beautiful voice.
Ron wrote this song and i would love to obtain a copy if its available.
Anyway Sparks have always been underated and i feel, always had an uphill struggle to get the recognition they deserve particularly in the uk,however,I do feel that sales of the albums would increase if they promoted themselves more,I understand the difficulties in finding a venue and indeed a promoter, but a whistlestop tour of uk record stores to sign new material could only enhance sales and promote their work to a larger audience.
When you consider bands like duran duran recieve accolades for outstanding contribution to the music industry I get to thinking the world has gone mad when ron and russell get not a mention.
the uk music scene sucks thank god the maels still produce quality without resorting to heavily relying or exploiting their back catalog or appearing on sounds of the seventies, they are still as fresh as ever and a much needed kick up the arse to the competition.(rant over)

In 1995, while still releasing the Fan Mael magazine, I came up with the idea of writing a biography on Sparks. Through their management of that time, DEF, I was informed that Ron and Russell would not give their cooperation to a biography since they were too busy and there were plans for an official biography. When it was announced that Amelia Cone would write and publish the official biography “A Song That Sings Itself”, I mothballed my idea and waited for this publication to arrive. However, nothing came and as it is now, I have little hope that this will ever be released.
For that reason, I have taken up my old plan to write a biography on Sparks. It’s about time somebody will do this and since it doesn’t seem like anybody will, I’d be glad to fill in this space. During the last 30 years, I’ve collected enough information, facts and material to start a venture like this and being a collector of biographies myself I just feel it’s about time a biography on Sparks will be written.
Despite the information gathered so far and details given by people whom I’ve spoken to and will speak to in the near future, I would still welcome any interesting information. Should anybody feel to have an interesting story or fact, please contact me directly (not through this forum). Please note: I’m not interested in any gossip or rumours but would welcome first hand information or facts that might contribute to the story of Sparks.
I intend to include a full discography, information on unreleased material, tours, collaborations and a list of known live recordings.
Thanks,
Ruud

2002 Kristian Hoffman album of duets, &;amp, features Russell on "Devil May Care". The chorus is similar to that of "After the Fall", in case you've heard this Klaus Nomi track.
I spoke with Joseph Fleury by phone in 1980. Among unreleased titles he listed was "When I Take the Field Friday". Is the shortened title in your "unreleased" section based on more recent information?

I've been a rabid Sparks fan since 1975, when I was 13, when I saw 'em doing "Looks, Looks, Looks" on (I think!) 'Supersonic'...bought Propaganda, and fell in love, and I've been devoted ever since, thru thick and thin. I still love the SOUND of Kimino & Propaganda - I love Ron's RMI piano, and Russel's demented falsetto - but I might agree w/Russ that Lil' Beethoven is the finest album they've ever done. Balls has some excellent stuff too, but LB is the Maels' tour-de-force, no question. And they're still pushing the envelope - they've always been brave, but maybe never so much as now - and God knows, we need that now more than ever. I'm proud to be a Sparks fan.

To Terry Stafford in England who wrote recently (rather) asking about "Amature Hour".It´s "Amateur Hour" and it´s on Sparks album "Kimono My House" from 1974(It was a rather big hit so it´s also on some compilation albums, but one can say it appeared in original on "Kimono My House" It was also a single in 1974.I´m not sure if the single came out before the album or the other way around?).I´m a HUGE sparks fan and has been since 1976 when I heard sparks on radio the first time(I think the first time). Then I saw them doing "Get In The Swing" on TV in a swedish children program X-mas eve 1976(a video or so that appeared in that program "Trazan Apansson")and I was totally hooked.I saw Sparks live for my first time in Stockholm March 24(the second gig, they did one there march 23 as well but there was just one "ticket" left for March 23 when I called in January and not a good seat so I decided to see them March 24 and almost in front row and it was faboulus,a dream come true.

Just letting everyone know there is a very good record review site (www.markprindle.com) I have been corresponding with Mark and he has just recently started listening to Sparks (and he loves them!) He hasn't reviewed their albums yet but with your help he might. Check out how to vote for Sparks at http://www.markprindle.com/whosnext.htm
Carl...is the mael-list still alive???
Please forward this message to other Sparks fans. If Sparks is one of the chosen bands, he will be reviewing ALL of their albums.

I have been a Sparks fan since 1974, and have recently re-bought the old 70's albums on CD despite having them on vinyl anyway. Enjoy the extra royalties Ron & Russell! They still sound great, especially "Indiscreet" which makes "L'il Beethoven" sound inferior if you like your rock with strings and horns!
The Bearsville stuff also sounds excellent too. I have seen the band more in the last nine years than at any time before. Their music is still consistently quirky and catchy at the same time and always entertaining. I love the fact that the brothers are far less an enigma than they used to be, more approachable and more visible nowadays. I'm surprised also that their two missing single gems, "Change" and "National Crime Awareness Week" don't get much of an airing.
Other than that, I am so pleased that they are capturing new followers and keeping the old ones, and FanMael helps a great deal being a very superior Sparks site than the official ones. I, too am a Radio Stars follower and it is pleasing that Martin Gordon still gets a mention.
Good luck to all the Sparks fans out there, keep the faith!

"Arts and Crafts Spectacular" appears on a new CD release in the UK entitled "Under the Influence - Morrissey" a compilation of tracks and artists he claims influenced him. The sleevenotes are, overall, pretentious sh*te as you would expect, but he has some nice things to say about Ron and the band.

Just wondering if anybody at FANMAEL is aware of an Island Records 7" 45 of some 70's country-ish act (probably somebody of some repute; I don't follow country myself) mis-labeled as the 1974 "Talent is an Asset/Lost and Found" single. I picked it up recently, all amped up to hear an early Sparks b-side, but was aghast at what came outta my speakers . . . til I realized it wasn't who I hoped it would be. Anyone know about this?

Do you have a trading page? for swaps etc only I noticed that Adrian Fisher was in the band Boxer and I think I have one of their band posters, somewhere (I would only need postage costs). The poster was of a naked girl with a strategically placed boxing glove. The bands stage act included, I think, a 20 foot long air inflated tube which shot out from the drum kit, s'funny what you remember. I know this is a bit off-beam as far as Russell and Ron are concerned.

I'd forgotten how much I liked Sparks. So, banged the first two albums on tape and put them on the car stereo. Singing along in a real amateur hour. Someone tell me whether the later albums, didn't realise there were so many, are in the same vein. I get a, sort of, lyrics cleverer than 10cc and the music is Roxy Music with a falsetto or was Roxy Music Sparks with a lounge lizard vocalist?

HI AGAIN FROM A BIG SPARKS FAN SINCE 1976.I FORGOT TO WRITE YESTERDAY THAT I FIRST SAW SPARKS IN ACTION (ON T.V)XMAS EVE 1976 IN A SWEDISH CHILDPROGRAM (I WAS ALMOST 12 YEARS OLD THEN)CALLED "TRAZAN APANSSON" WITH ACTOR AND MORE..LARS(LASSE) ÅBERG AND KLASSE MÖLLBERG.IT WAS SAID 100% OF THE CHILDREN IN SWEDEN SAW THAT SERIE.IT WAS A SEQUENCE CALLED "ROCKTIME" OR SO THEY HAD IN EACH PROGRAM(MUSICVIDEOS OR SO THEY HAD BOUGHT).IN THIS FIRST PROGRAM(OF 9) OF "TRAZAN APANSSON" THEY HAD A SEQUENCE OF SPARKS PERFORMING "GET IN THE SWING"( THE WHOLE SONG).I REMEMBER I THOUGHT RON AT THE PIANO WHERE IN FACT LASSE ÅBERG("TRAZAN")THAT WAS "IN-CUT" BECAUSE THEY LOOK A LITTLE LIKE EACH OTHER.AFTER THAT APPERANCE(SPELLING?)I WAS HOOKED AND OFCOURSE I HAVE BEEN IN LOVE WITH THE SPARKSMUSIC AND MAEL BROS. SINCE THEN.I HAD HEARD A FEW SONGS AND RECORDED FROM RADIO EARLIER 1976.I´M NOW 38 AND WILL ALWAYS ADORE SPARKS MORE THAN ANY OTHER MUSICIANS.ALSO I SAW SPARKS IN SWEDEN MARCH 24.THE FIRST TIME I SAW THEM LIVE AND HOPE I WILL SOON AGAIN.AT THAT CONCERT I SAW A SWEDISH MUSICIAN AND GUITARIST IN THE AUDIANCE (JANNE SCHAFFER)WHO HAD WORKED WITH LASSE ÅBERG("TRAZAN")AND THEY HAVE A BAND TOGETHER(ELECTRIC BANANA BAND)THANKS FROM NOW.

I know that this is not healthy but If sparks do not return to england soon I will have to board a plane to the U.S.A and drag the little smashers back myself, exclamation mark exclamation mark.

Though I had already heard about the Sparks a long time ago (but I only knew 'When do I get to sing My Way?') it was only now that I actually listened to one of their albums, Lil' Beethoven, of course, which got execellent reviews here and that's what got me curious about it in the first place. It is indeed a masterpiece of grandiose excess and sharp sense of humour. Definitely 'entertainment in extremis'. Of course I'll go see them in Lisbon on the 26th. and my mom's coming too. she's 67 and she just loves that record!

The Midi songs show how simple the songs are.
I find with Sparks at 1st I don't like the song, it almost sounds too stupid to listen to. But then they twist it on you, all the sudden your humming along tapping your foot.
Marching Band Music comes to mind, I want to March around Singing Amature Hour!
Who would even think to write a song like " It Ain't 1918 " ?
Great site for us Sparks fans.

I then saw a TV advert for a CD which made me sure. So, naturally, I bought it.
The track is called Muzak by an artist called Trisco and the sleeve notes confirm that he (or they) have sampled Tryouts For The Human Race. It features on a CD called Clubbed which is mixed by Judge Jules.
When you listen to the track you can also clearly hear a small sample from My Other Voice and possible also La Dolce Vita.
Has anyone else heard this or have any further information about the artist /DJ?

Hello...can anyone help me with the name/songs of a cool Sparks CD which I strangely heard playing by the sound check guys at a local (Lloyd Cole) concert here in St. Louis....the songs are very electronic, cool 'blade runner like' instrumentals. No voices. The color of the actual CD I believe was green and I want to say that I caught a glance of the word "up" on the disc? I think there was a drawing of a little lightning bolt on it as well. If you can help with the name or title of this particular disk, I would be very happy!
(I hope this doesn't fall into your stupid questions list)

years ago. Proceeded to purchase everything
before/after that. These guys are genuine genius'.
Its just that the rest of the world doesn't
know it. Probably a good thing for us Sparkophiles.
I would like to entertain Russ and Ron
in a notion that I have had for some time.
Thier tunes are made for the stage. No, I
am not one of those kinda' guys. But I do
appreciate the fact that you can come
away from a Sparks show hummin' the tunes.
Rare these days. I have put together
a set of scripts that utilize the Mael
Brothers tunes. These tunes were made
for the stage. Is there anyway that you
can convey this message to the boys?
I await your response and remain...
With,
Best Regards,
Garyb

It seems like the group Oingo Bongo wrote similar type sounds in the mid to late 80s...so Sparks was ahead of everything. Maybe too far ahead as so few people seemed to ever appreciate them or know who they are now. I still recall going to see them in concert in Chicago once when they were the opening act for Patti Smith and leaving as she started playing...the ushers at the door where so surprised we were leaving then that they asked us about it and we said we were only there for Sparks and could care less about stupid old Patti Smith.
